Chapter ten

A TRAIL OF SMOKE

Jack

I sat straight in my chair with my arm on the table and eyes on Grace as she messily ate baby food that Cassandra fed to her.

“Open up, baby,” Cassandra said softly with a smile to Grace, urging her to eat up, and Grace obeyed.

“How was work yesterday? You left pretty early. Marcy told me when I came back from work,” I said.

“Work was fine.” I chewed my bacon slowly as I kept my eyes on Grace, unwilling to change the calm atmosphere in the room. “Gracie, you’re almost done now. Let’s get you ready to wash up.”

I couldn’t help but notice the different tone of voice she used on me and on Grace. It irked me, but not enough to have me speak about it.

She sounded more professional than usual. It wasn’t like I didn’t want her to sound professional. It was the only way we’ve been speaking for the past few days. It just sounded a lot more monotone and straight to the point than normal. I leaned on my other arm, facing her without looking at her, and decided to test it out once more.

“Are you going to be leaving early often?”

“No. It was just yesterday. If you need me for something, please tell me beforehand. I don’t know how suddenly my plans may change. But I’ll do what I can to finish my hours here, sir.”

“Sir?” I couldn’t help blurting out the word. It seemed as though it was the most bitter thing I ever said.

For the first time that day, she turned to face me. I felt a shiver run down my spine as her bright eyes settled on me.

God, how I missed them.

“Is something wrong?”

Like a deer caught in headlights—beautiful headlights that I have been trying to avoid looking into for the past few days—I stared and did not answer. Until she tucked her lips into her mouth, diverting my gaze from her eyes and breaking the spell.

I longed to pull them out and see how glossy she made them.

But I refrained.

“No. Nothing’s wrong. I was just worried . . .” I trailed off, not knowing what to say.

“I will try to make sure it does not happen again.” She looked away and picked up Grace’s bowl.

I looked back to Grace, avoiding staring at Cassandra’s body as she walked to the sink. She had on that particular sundress again, and it has been hard keeping my eyes off her since I woke up that morning. She seemed different than usual.

I knew she acted as per my request to stay away for Sarah’s sake, but it was like she acted so strict about it.

And I did not like it.

What did I expect?

I remembered the way she looked at me when I told her I was bad for her and we should not be doing what we were doing. I wanted to keep it that way, but anyone who saw me or studied me afterward knew I was far from okay with that plan.
